Mr Sachs gives us new insights into the characters he delineates. His handling of well-known landmarks, such as City Hall Steps, the Gaiety Cafe, Malay Camp and many others, are evocative of an interesting past that still stirs nostalgic longings. There is also a fine study of the City of Capetown.

The books speaks the language of the Rand, and I doubt whether any other writer has caught more than the faintest murmur of it. They are solid credentials. Mr Sachs not only writes well but with humour and warmth.
