Fire, Flood and Ice is a well illustrated book about an aspect of the South African Air force (SAAF) that has received limited coverage in other books about the SAAF. Air Search and Rescue Missions are the humanitarian face of an organization that is more renowned for its aggressive operations during World War II and subsequent conflicts. The missions detailed in this book have had a great effect on both the image of the SAAF and the individuals who have benefitted from the Air force’s intervention. Dick Lord was one of the SAAF’s most experienced and senior pilots and so brings a wealth of experience to the subject.
